Students Burnt Beyond Recognition as Late-Night Inferno Engulfs School
A devastating fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri students. The tragic incident, which occurred late Tuesday night, left several others injured and caused extensive damage to the school.
Inferno Rages for Hours Before Being Contained
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire raged for nearly three hours before it was finally brought under control. Despite efforts to evacuate students from the premises, many were unable to escape. According to local sources, the charred remains of the victims were only discovered after the fire was extinguished. Sixteen other students sustained injuries, some of them severe, and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Stored Firewood Suspected as Cause of Fire
Residents in the area believe the fire was triggered by stored sticks, locally referred to as kara, which were kept inside the school building. Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, a community member, stated that the blaze originated from Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside the students’ study hall, where over 100 pupils were staying. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the disaster.
Victims Laid to Rest Following Islamic Rites
In accordance with Islamic tradition, the 17 deceased students were buried on Wednesday. The mass burial was attended by grieving families, religious leaders, and members of the local community, who mourned the tragic loss of young lives. Officials have pledged to provide support to the victims’ families and those receiving treatment in the hospital.
Local Authorities Respond to the Incident
Speaking to Daily Trust, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Muazu Haidara, confirmed the incident and stated that he was on his way to assess the scene. He assured the public that further details would be provided as investigations progress. Meanwhile, community members have called for improved safety measures in boarding schools to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
