Acclaimed writer, filmmaker, and community leader Nkechi First has received the prestigious Woman of Impact Award at the Brighter Futures Christmas Dinner & Community Champion Awards. The honour recognises her outstanding contributions to social advocacy and community empowerment. The award celebrates her consistent leadership and transformative impact across marginalised communities.
The glittering ceremony, organised by Brighter Futures Initiative CIC, was held at the National Centre of Excellence and brought together community leaders, volunteers, and changemakers from across the UK. Set against a festive atmosphere and accompanied by a three-course dinner, the event celebrated individuals whose work has made a tangible difference in their communities.
Recognising Leadership That Drives Real Impact
The Woman of Impact Award honours women whose leadership and service demonstrate “strides worthy of emulation.” In presenting the award, organisers highlighted Nkechi First’s long-standing dedication to empowering underrepresented voices and her consistent impact within the voluntary and community sector.
Founder and chairperson of the Unity for Integration Project (UFIP), a Scotland-based organisation, Nkechi First has played a pivotal role in supporting women, families, migrants, and marginalised communities. Through UFIP, she has championed initiatives focused on empowerment, wellbeing, digital inclusion, and advocacy, helping many women regain confidence, develop skills, and re-enter employment.

During the presentation, a representative of Brighter Futures Initiative CIC offered a personal tribute, recalling firsthand experiences of Nkechi First’s work in Glasgow.
“I was a witness to that while I lived in Glasgow,” the presenter said. “She was able to uplift many women who were unemployed and support them to get back into work.”
The organisers also praised the unique intersection of Nkechi First’s work in technology, film, and social change. As a filmmaker, she uses storytelling not merely for entertainment but as a tool for education and advocacy, producing content that exposes social issues and amplifies community voices. Her documentary When Women Direct highlights the contributions of female directors in Nollywood, challenging dominant narratives through African feminist perspectives.

Born and raised in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria, Nkechi First has shaped her journey through resilience and determination. An entrepreneur from the age of 17, she has built a multifaceted career spanning media, publishing, filmmaking, and community development. As an author, she has written several books on personal development, AI literacy, and family life, consistently using storytelling as a tool for empowerment and transformation.
