Atiku firmly stated, “If the PDP decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South or South-East specifically, I won’t contest it.” He conveyed his willingness to support Obi, if decided by the party, emphasizing unity and collective decision-making. Atiku’s remarks highlight his dedication to party principles and democratic values.

Possibility of a PDP-Labour Party Merger

Atiku also highlighted the possibility of a merger between the PDP and Labour Party, indicating that his recent meeting with Obi might be an early sign of a potential alliance for the 2027 elections. Atiku characterized the meeting as a cordial exchange among opposition factions, underlining its significance for Nigeria’s democratic fabric. Transitionally, he expressed optimism about the potential for merging parties to unite towards shared objectives. Affirmatively, Atiku asserted the feasibility of merging parties to pursue mutual objectives, dismissing worries about candidate selection hindering discussions. His remarks underscored a commitment to cooperation and collective action in advancing political goals.

Ongoing Political Engagement

Explaining his continued political involvement, Atiku stressed the importance of active participation to address the challenges facing Nigeria. “People are suffering, and we are committed to making Nigeria a better place,” he stated. He emphasized that age should not be a barrier to political aspirations and that everyone has the right to aspire to political roles. Atiku also noted that his future candidacy would depend on the party’s decision, highlighting that it is the party’s duty to determine the direction for the next election.

Speculations and Strategic Meetings

The meeting between Atiku and Obi, their first public interaction since the 2023 election, has sparked speculation about a potential coalition for the 2027 elections. Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 to run with the Labour Party, finished third in the 2023 presidential election. Atiku attributed his loss to Bola Tinubu to Obi’s departure, suggesting that their combined votes could have secured a victory. Photos of Obi’s meetings with PDP leaders, including former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, have gone viral, fueling further speculation about future political strategies.
