Lagos, Nigeria – December 29, 2025

Former two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries in a serious car accident on Monday that claimed the lives of two people, according to local police and multiple reports.
The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. local time on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Makun, Ogun State. Joshua, 36, was a passenger in a Lexus SUV traveling in a two-vehicle convoy when it collided with a stationary truck. Eyewitness accounts indicate there were four occupants in the vehicle, with Joshua seated in the back.
Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Joshua was taken to a hospital for treatment and described his condition as stable, with authorities adding that he is “fine.” An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
The accident comes just 10 days after Joshua’s return to the ring, where he scored a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami. The British-Nigerian fighter, who has strong ties to his ancestral homeland and was on a planned visit to Nigeria, had been enjoying downtime following the high-profile bout.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s most heavily trafficked routes and has a reputation for frequent accidents due to high volumes of traffic, including heavy trucks.
Joshua’s team has not yet released an official statement, but his promoter, Eddie Hearn, indicated he is seeking further details and noted that the boxer appears to be okay based on available information.
The crash has once again highlighted ongoing concerns about road safety on Nigeria’s major highways.
