Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti on Friday commissioned and formally handed over the first-ever Nigerian Air Force Administrative Complex in Umuahia to the Federal Government, describing the project as a major boost to security and development in the state.
The facility, constructed by the Abia State Government, marks the arrival of the Nigerian Air Force in the state and completes the presence of all three branches of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The Army already maintains a base in Ohafia, while the Navy is present in Owerinta.
“We officially commissioned and handed over the first-ever Nigerian Air Force Administrative Complex in Umuahia to the Federal Government yesterday. This landmark project represents our commitment to strengthening security and protecting the lives and property of all who live and work in Abia,” Governor Otti said in a statement.
He stressed that security remains a non-negotiable priority for his administration. “Security is a fundamental right, and for us, it is non-negotiable. The presence of the Nigerian Air Force in our State completes the circle of the nation’s armed forces already here… Together, they form a stronger shield for our people.”
Governor Otti expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Kelvin Aneke, for their support and partnership. He described the collaboration between the Federal Government and Abia State as proof that joint efforts can deliver lasting peace and progress.
Beyond its security role, the governor noted that the complex will stimulate socio-economic growth, create opportunities for young people, and support sustainable development. In a further commitment to a permanent military presence, the state has allocated land at the ongoing Abia Airport project site in Nsulu for a permanent Nigerian Air Force Base.
Speaking directly to Air Force personnel, Otti said: “To the officers and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force, welcome to Abia. Be assured of our full support as you carry out your constitutional duties to safeguard our dear State.”
The commissioning ceremony, attended by senior military officers, government officials and traditional leaders, featured the formal ribbon-cutting and inspection of the modern administrative building, which includes office spaces and a well-equipped conference facility.
The project underscores Abia State’s continued investment in security infrastructure as part of broader efforts to create a safer environment for residents, investors and economic activities across the state.
